Alright so here's the deal. I've been thinking about starting a Kenyon music blog or something. I feel like the imaginary Kenyon bubble is very real when it comes to good music. For evidence of this look no further than the typical Friday night party anywhere on campus North or South. The music is always lame, overplayed or both. I'm not claiming to be an expert or anything but I have a passion for rockin' parties and I feel like I'm getting better at it. Not that this potential blog would only rep party jams... I'm hoping to just provide a running commentary on music that caught my ear on a biweekly to weekly basis. Some of it would be available for download through rapidshare but you know you can always download from me, NITEFLITE, on Kenster if you're on campus. I'm definitely looking for people who would be interesting in writing for the blog, whether on a consistent basis or not. Until this blog comes into existence I'll probably just post via this dislist. If you want off just let me know or if you know anyone who would want on also let me know.
So yesterday around 12:30 I finally decided to walk down to South lot and pick my car up to leave Gambier. I lugged my bags all the way down the mud slide behind Leonard down to the lot and got all the way to my car without realizing that I didn't have my keys. I stashed my bags between two cars, walked back up the hill, and proceeded to rip my room to shreds looking for my key. I'm almost positive that I left the key in my coat pocket but young Escobar wore my coat on a rather physical night of pledging activities. So.... Fuck... I realize I'm stuck on campus with no time to figure shit out because the dorms are supposed to close at noon. I called EDIT to buy some time and called a few brothers. This brings me to where I sit now, The Duplexington Estates. I'm here til Tuesday... boooo
Lonely and bored, I decided to catch up on all the new music I missed during my midterm writing marathon. I noticed a new A-Trak remix on PMA, my favorite music blog www.prettymuchamazing.com, of Bounce, the MSTRKRFT single. Of course I picked up that track as well as the entire new MSTRKRFT album. I ended up getting way to stoned to stay awake and listen to all the shit that I downloaded until today. After waking up and being the duplex boys' mommy for a little while I sat down, blazed some of this amazing bubblegum I picked up last week, and put on Fist of God. What ensued can only be described as other worldly. At only 38 minutes its a pretty quick listen but this Canadian duo made the most of every second. It kicks off with an in your face, dancy, synth heavy track assisted by the vocals of r&b singer Lil Mo. Lil Mo hasn't really seen chart success since her debut album but her vocals really fill out It Ain't Love and give it radio viability outside the electro house circuit.
Bounce, the album's first single, dropped back in 2008 and has since been remixed by everyone with a laptop and an ear to the bloghouse streets. MSTRKRFT picks up some street cred with a lyrical assist from rap mc N.O.R.E. There is no doubt that this track will stand the test of time and make a lot of end of year lists given its popularity on the remix circuit.
The next track that blew my mind was Heartbreaker featuring John Legend. When I first heard there was going to be a John Legend MSTRKRFT collaboration I didn't think it could possibly outdo MSTRKRFT's own Green Light remix. WRONG. These remix masters took it to a whole new level, melding a driving piano line and a latecomer synth riff in with John's legendary smooth vocals. Yup I'm that much of a fanboy.
This post is getting way too long so I'll leave the rest of the album up to you guys. BUT... I wouldn't recommend you miss Click Click or Word Up as E-40 and Ghostface solidify the long awaited marriage of electro and hip hop.
