It's not that easy for you and I. One can struggle for a lifetime fighting the inability to express... to vocalize... to just say it and get it over with. Sometimes it's the critics and detractors, but sometimes it's the like-minded that tie your tongue. Embarrassment, insecurity, overwhelming grief and boundless disbelief.. the story of my life.. words unsaid and unheard but nonetheless alive and battling their oppression. I love the Born Ruffians and they're back in a big way with their second LP. I will say that it may be a tad bit over-indulged but for the die hard Ruffian.. it's exactly what we've been waiting for.

Clearly this is a band that loooves it's fan base. Why else would they say it?

Dubstep is no longer the lonely stepchild hiding away in dark corners of the UK.... it's gone global. From sunny California to New Zealand, home to Mt Eden Dubstep, the genre is everywhere... picking up music fanatics of all persuasions. As a testament to the growing crossover appeal of dubstep, I've posted a few remixes of popular hip hop, electropop and alt rock tracks that I'll be banging in the Lancer this summer. I've got to rant a little bit about the first track. Several times passersby have wrongly identified the "Mmmm whatcha say" lyric as originating from a Jason Derulo song. Whatcha Say by Jason Derulo heavily samples Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. That's right... the only catchy, original and worthwhile part of that chart-topping hit song was penned by Imogen Heap... not Jason Derulo. Imogen Heap deserves most of the credit for Derulo's success on that song as far as I'm concerned. Thank you and enjoy a fantastic alteration of the real deal!

You guessed it... this post is about everybody's favorite long-haired subsonic sensei, Bassnectar. I almost passed up tix to Lorin's set with none other than Major Lazer last Friday night. Let me tell you... it would have been one of the biggest mistakes of a lifetime. I've never seen an electronic artist go so hard for so long... (that's what she said). The set was 3+ hours long.... even after Diplo and crew left the stage.

As a vehement Animal Collective fan, I couldn't have been more pleased to hear that Domino Records "accidentally" mailed pre-order copies of their new EP, Fall Be Kind, a near-full month before their scheduled release. Now I'm merely speculating that this was a purposeful move by AC... but I just can't see how anyone could mistakenly put the discs on a truck to ship. Regardless.... thanks to the leak I've been listening to a lossless digital copy of the EP for a few days now... What follows I cannot be held accountable for as I was under the influence of the giddy excitement of not having class and the AC leak among other tings...

From the very start, the ethereal sounds of Graze draw you in... piquing your ear just in time for Avey Tare to announce his presence. "Let me begin...... Feels good cause it's early..... Ease open my eyes and let light in." Then you start to notice the strings... Were those there before? I don't know but they're here now and they're beautiful in a naturally majestic kinda way. The sound envelopes you and all of a sudden you get that nestled-in-your-bed-savoring-the-warmth-of-your-lush-down-comforter-while-the-sun-starts-to-peak-through-the-shutters kind of feeling. You know the one... still grasping at the fleeting images of your dream like wisps of smoke... clinging to the comfort of a world all your own. "Let's not worry. It's our morning." Well Avey's right there too crooning from the windowsill, "Let me begin... let me begin... let me begin."

And begin he does.. Graze is one hell of an opening track. I'm not sure that description is gonna make much sense right now... but take a listen and see if you don't know exactly what I'm talking about.

Even though the recording for this album was just completed, and it is as of yet unnamed, I couldn't wait any longer. The Born Ruffians burst onto the scene with Red, Yellow & Blue and have been grabbing attention ever since. Two of these three chill guys from Toronto made a stop by my dorm after an amazing show in rural Ohio and confirmed what we already knew: they're just as awesome in person as in the studio. I'm waiting with tiptoe anticipation for 2010 to roll around so I can hear exactly what new sounds these Ruffians have been toying with. I don't think there is a band I'm looking forward to more. As you must imagine... I'm feeling pretty good after Michigan's upset victory over the Fighting Irish and the Chippewa's last second steal at MSU. What else would you expect me to do after a great afternoon of football but to find some new music to keep the mood rolling through the night?

Tonight, Darwin Deez has stepped up to the plate with his refreshing and instantly infectious indie pop sound. I admit I haven't heard much from this guy... but what I have immediately piqued my interest. This talented, charmingly simple hipster manages to take the decidedly discouraging, even vindictive, lyrics of Bad Day and join it with a catchy, delectable beat for a match made in indie pop heaven.

Radar Detector is lyrically Bad Day's polar opposite. It's a brilliant metaphorical expression of Darwin's adoration for a new flame.

Darwin Deez's sound is refreshingly simple and enjoyable. I only wish I would have discovered it before summer was pretty much done. Though, in all honesty I kind of appreciate the fact that I haven't heard Darwin Deez on any nationally televised commercials or over the pa in the mall. There's something delightfully old school to be said about indie rock that stays... well... independent. Enjoy... and if this leaves you wanting more you can purchase the whole album, darwin deez.

E-603 pwns Girl Talk

I used to think Girl Talk was one of a kind... Don't get me wrong he's still the shit but he is definitely not the most innovative mash-up god walking the planet. I'm not yet sure if I can reserve that title for E-603 but he's definitely in the running along with Immuzikation, The Hood Internet, Super Mash Bros. and BEARBOT. On to the music...

I really dig the way E-603's jams flow together in a way Mr. Gillis can't match with his glitchy, ADD style. E-603 also reaches a bit more into the indielectropop genre, which is a definite plus for me. Anyone who can make Ratatat's Mirando gel with Missy Elliot's Get Your Freak On is golden in my book. This combo comes from If You Wanna from E-603's sophomore effort Torn Up. The LP is a mash-up masterpiece and features a somewhat more mature side of the mix 'n' mash aficionado than his freshman album Something for Everyone. Sampling acts such as Vanessa Carlton, City High, Eminem, Semisonic, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Justice, The Blow, Rihanna, Matt & Kim, Michael Jackson and Vampire Weekend there certainly is something for absolutely everyone in E-603's repertoire.

Ok so a LOT of people are calling Passion Pit 2009's MGMT. Now for the record, I AM NOT AGREEING. I think Passion Pit has carved out a niche of its own and Angelakos' lyrical stylings really can't be equaled by anyone. That being said, I don't know if any single has been remixed as much as Passion Pit's Sleepyhead... except maybe The Management's Kids. So there... I guess in that sense they're incredibly similar. Ohio rappers are doing big things these days. Think Ray Cash, Chip tha Ripper, Hi-Tek, and Bone Thugz and you'll realize that this new dude on the scene has had his way paved by big names in the rap game. Despite the trailblazers that came before him Kid Cudi, officially Scott Mescudi, decided he needed to flip the game completely on its head to get his point across... and get his point across he does. Cudi's smooth delivery and guy next door feel have got fans going nuts from Cleveland to Los Angeles. Living in the Kenyon bubble, I thought I was feeling CuDi all on my own. Little did I know he was getting spins even in my hometown. Mr. Solo Dolo is getting huge fast and for good reason... His music is amazing! Moon Man has dropped 3 mixtapes and each one picks up where the last left off and then ups the ante. He can spit it hard on classic hip hop beats, flow effortlessly over new age indielectro jams, and he can even sing a lil bit. KiD CuDi IS THE FUTURE... and if you heard it hear first drop your man a comment. :)

Yes... they are. Right now... through a pair of Sony MDR-V700's that is. If you don't already know about this outstanding electro quintet you are seriously behind the times. Passion Pit has been ripping it up since late '07 and are best known for their sensational single Sleepyhead. In fact, they put it on their freshman EP and their recent LP Manners. From beginning to end Manners is an absolute indielectro masterpiece. The combination of Mike Angelakos' high-pitched, almost boyish vocals and the group's electro rock sound leaves me thinking Phoenix with a splash of Ezra of Vampire Weekend. Don't get me wrong though. Passion Pit has created a niche all their own and possibly an album to knock AC's Merriweather Post Pavilion out of the #1 spot on my 2009 end of year list. I believe my last Passion Pit posts were removed for copyright violations so no album tracks will be available for download. Never fear though you can still listen.... and download some other level remixes.

Even though you already know where I'm going with this one I think it deserves a little background. You see... I've got quite a hunger for good remixes and I really couldn't care less if I ever liked the original song in the first place. A lot of people don't really feel this, but of course these are the same people rocking out to Kiss Me through the Phone 5 times a night every weekend. So... fuck em.

This picture gets me every time... Well anyway... I've been digging this band called Starfucker out of Portland, OR. I don't know too much about them but they seem to be pretty new to the scene. Their self titled album features mostly electro/synth pop sound that I find eerily similar to early MGMT. I've got a meeting soon so I'll leave the rest up to you.

WELCOME TO THE HOOD, BON IVER

in 2007, Chicago based DJ duo THE HOOD INTERNET, comprised of DJ ABX and DJ STV SLV, came on to the internet music scene. Despite the countless number of kids out there with a computer and garageband who believe they have what it takes, HOOD's combination of mainstream hip-hop lyrics over distinct indie/synth/prog/electro beats gained extreme notoriety, even to the point where their remix of Estelle's "American Boy" over The Ting Ting's "Shut Up And Let Me Go" entitled "Shut Up, American Boy", was performed live by both sets of artists at the 2009 Brit awards. Needless to say, the Hood Internet is only going up from here.

I leave you with my most favorite recent track, a combination of BON IVER's "Flume" over beats by FRIENDLY FIRES & AEROPLANE. Marked by his smooth voice (...pause) and subdued but intricate guitar work, BON IVER has become a huge success on music blogs, radio, and television shows over the last few years. His debut album, "For Emma, Forever Ago" is a damn gem. I think that's all that needs to be said about that. The Hood's version gives an extra boost of "make you want to get up and fucking dance" makes this one of my favorite songs of the year thus far. It will soon become yours, too.

Alright so here's the deal. I've been thinking about starting a Kenyon music blog or something. I feel like the imaginary Kenyon bubble is very real when it comes to good music. For evidence of this look no further than the typical Friday night party anywhere on campus North or South. The music is always lame, overplayed or both. I'm not claiming to be an expert or anything but I have a passion for rockin' parties and I feel like I'm getting better at it. Not that this potential blog would only rep party jams... I'm hoping to just provide a running commentary on music that caught my ear on a biweekly to weekly basis. Some of it would be available for download through rapidshare but you know you can always download from me, NITEFLITE, on Kenster if you're on campus. I'm definitely looking for people who would be interesting in writing for the blog, whether on a consistent basis or not. Until this blog comes into existence I'll probably just post via this dislist. If you want off just let me know or if you know anyone who would want on also let me know.

So yesterday around 12:30 I finally decided to walk down to South lot and pick my car up to leave Gambier. I lugged my bags all the way down the mud slide behind Leonard down to the lot and got all the way to my car without realizing that I didn't have my keys. I stashed my bags between two cars, walked back up the hill, and proceeded to rip my room to shreds looking for my key. I'm almost positive that I left the key in my coat pocket but young Escobar wore my coat on a rather physical night of pledging activities. So.... Fuck... I realize I'm stuck on campus with no time to figure shit out because the dorms are supposed to close at noon. I called EDIT to buy some time and called a few brothers. This brings me to where I sit now, The Duplexington Estates. I'm here til Tuesday... boooo

Lonely and bored, I decided to catch up on all the new music I missed during my midterm writing marathon. I noticed a new A-Trak remix on PMA, my favorite music blog www.prettymuchamazing.com, of Bounce, the MSTRKRFT single. Of course I picked up that track as well as the entire new MSTRKRFT album. I ended up getting way to stoned to stay awake and listen to all the shit that I downloaded until today. After waking up and being the duplex boys' mommy for a little while I sat down, blazed some of this amazing bubblegum I picked up last week, and put on Fist of God. What ensued can only be described as other worldly. At only 38 minutes its a pretty quick listen but this Canadian duo made the most of every second. It kicks off with an in your face, dancy, synth heavy track assisted by the vocals of r&b singer Lil Mo. Lil Mo hasn't really seen chart success since her debut album but her vocals really fill out It Ain't Love and give it radio viability outside the electro house circuit.

Bounce, the album's first single, dropped back in 2008 and has since been remixed by everyone with a laptop and an ear to the bloghouse streets. MSTRKRFT picks up some street cred with a lyrical assist from rap mc N.O.R.E. There is no doubt that this track will stand the test of time and make a lot of end of year lists given its popularity on the remix circuit.

The next track that blew my mind was Heartbreaker featuring John Legend. When I first heard there was going to be a John Legend MSTRKRFT collaboration I didn't think it could possibly outdo MSTRKRFT's own Green Light remix. WRONG. These remix masters took it to a whole new level, melding a driving piano line and a latecomer synth riff in with John's legendary smooth vocals. Yup I'm that much of a fanboy.

This post is getting way too long so I'll leave the rest of the album up to you guys. BUT... I wouldn't recommend you miss Click Click or Word Up as E-40 and Ghostface solidify the long awaited marriage of electro and hip hop.
